Cutting through all the political rhetoric, here's the events as they happened:
1. Continuing cross-border raids by both Amarrian slavers and Minmatar freedom fighters increase tension between the two empires.
2. The staff of a military forge in the Caldari State stage a revolt of sorts; they successfully repel the security forces sent in to quell them. Leading the fighters is a man named Tibius Heth.
3. A mysterious benefactor(s) buy up a large number of shares in the company that owned the forge, then turn over control to Tibius Heth. He becomes noted for his powerful anti-Gallente speeches.
4. A Gallente-Caldari peace conference in the Malkalen system in Caldari space ends in violence when the largest Federation ship on station, a Nyx-class Mothership, deliberately collides with the Ishukone station where the conference was to take place. Subsequently, Caldari Navy ships on station open fire on the remaining Federal Navy ships in the area. Among the dead at the station is Otro Garushi, a leading State politician who had advocated a closer, more firendly relationship between the Federation and the State.
5. In the aftermath, Tibius Heth's popularity in the State soars. Several more companies place themselves under Heth's control.
6. A fleet of previously unknown Minmatar ships, including Dreadnought-class vessels, bearing the ID's of Thukker Tribe and Republic Fleet, enter the Yulai system and approach the CONCORD headquarters there on an attack vector. DED ships respond, and a standoff ensues before the Minmatar ships leave.
7. Tibius Heth now has near complete control of the State. He continues advocating a more aggresive relationship with the Federation. Meanwhile, violence in the Federation and State against against former citizens of the other empire rises.
8. At this point, several major things happen nearly simultaneously:
- A large Caldari task force enters the system of Luminaire, the Federation Capital System. It settles into orbit over Caldari Prime, and ground troops land on the planet. Federation spacecraft sent to counterattack are destroyed by forces that include a Titan-class vessel.
- The mysterious Thukker/Republic Fleet force that had been in Yulai previously returns there. This time, they engage DED warships and destroy the CONCORD HQ, resulting in a temporary loss of command within CONCORD. A Titan-class vessel is deployed by the Matari force.
- Several other Minmatar fleets cross the Amarr-Minmatar and Minmatar-Ammatar borders. These fleets - along with the one in Yulai are later revealed to be composed of the Minmatar 'Elders,' a force previously thought lost. The fleets in Amarr/Ammatar space begin a campaign to liberate the Minmatar enslaved in Amarr space. At least 1 more Titan-class vessel is deployed.
9. Several hours later, several more events occur:
- Gallente President Fouritain surrenders Caldari Prime. The debacle there is later revealed to be the result of a traitorous Gallente Admiral.
- Jamyl Sarum, an Amarrian Heir previously thought dead, reappears over Mekhios (on of the planets being attacked by the Elder fleet) and uses a superweapon of unknown origin to destroy the enemy fleet.
10. Jamyl Sarum is hailed as a savior and is declared the next Empress by the major Amarrian houses, despite her breaking of tradition.
11. Elections are announced in the Minmatar Republic. The only candidate is Maleatu Shakor, who was previously a freedom fighter against the Amarr. He eventually replaces the government of Karin Midular, who was seen as more pro-Amarr.
12. All four empires sign a CONCORD treaty that allows them to establish militias to wage war upon another.
These events occured over many months, and are only the most recent events that led to war; several previous events (including the assasination of an Amarrian Emperor) had caused tension in the major empires. I suggest you search the news database for a more complete understanding.
